My favorite new Commercial …Commonwealth Bank: Anthem
January 25, 2008
I love this spot more than the Richard Simmons ESPN spot from a few weeks back. It definitely hits home if you are in advertising. This brand new 60 second spot out of the minds of Goodby Silverstein & Partners has a put a spell on me. I have literally watched it 20 times already. This commercial is uber funny and includes a cameo from bigtime Hollywood director Michael Bay!.. Enjoy

I don’t think this is clever or funny at all, for the very reason you’ve find it amusing – it’s targeted (poorly I might ad) to people who know about the Commonwealth Bank appointing a US agency, and care about it. It strikes me as a campaign that’s arisen from a belief that that’s front page news in Australia – and is completely at odds with their previous positioning as Australia’s favourite bank.
I honestly believe that this, and a subsequent spot they’ve done showing Americans researching cricket with members of the national team, is some of the worst advertising I’ve ever seen.
